Microsoft Founder Bill Gates Made 2022′s Biggest Charitable Donation
The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s annual list of the largest charitable gifts for 2022 totaled almost $9.3 billion.
Three of the top gifts went to private foundations and three universities to support environmental sustainability, children’s mental health, and stem-cell research.
The other gifts supported cancer research and treatment, housing efforts, youth programs, and reproductive health.
Bill Gates topped the list with a $5 billion donation to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support global health, development, policy and advocacy, and U.S. education.
Ann and John Doerr’s $1.1 billion donation to Stanford University through their Benificus Foundation will go towards the creation of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.
Jackie and Mike Bezos’ $710.5 million gift to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center will fund 36 research labs and support clinical trials and immunotherapy research.
Warren Buffett’s $474.3 million gift to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation will support women’s reproductive health and provide college scholarships in Nebraska.
Eli and Edythe Broad gave a $100 million gift to the Broad Institute for stem cell research and regenerative medicine.
Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea donated $1 million to the JBJ Soul Kitchen Community Restaurant in Toms River, New Jersey.
$50 million from Nancy and Craig McCaw to the McCaw Family Foundation to support a variety of causes including conservation, education, and healthcare
The Giving Pledge, a campaign to encourage the wealthy to commit to giving away at least half of their wealth, currently has 204 signatories with a combined net worth of over $1.2 trillion.
The Giving Pledge was founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010.
The campaign has inspired many wealthy individuals to make significant charitable donations, including several on the list of the 10 largest charitable gifts for 2022.
